A Day at the Ranch

A DAY AT THE RANCH written by Debbie Williamson Mornings start early on the ranch. It is rise and shine and out of bed at 5:00 am to be at the ranch for 6:00 am. The first thing that needs to be done is to feed and water all of the animals. The horses are fed first. They are fed hay and grain and are given fresh water. There are a couple of colts that have been born in the past few weeks. They are given a special scratch and pet. They love all the attention they can get. In one stall is a little calf, mooing like crazy. He is half starved and needs to be fed by bottle. He doesn't stop mooing until he gets what he wants and when he does … Read entire article »

Bald Eagle

BALD EAGLE written by Debbie Williamson I have always wanted to see a bald eagle. Bald eagles to me are the king of the animal family. They are pure power and purely majestic. Bald eagles are not something that you get to see every day of your life, but something that you might, if you are lucky, get to see once in a lifetime. I finally got my chance to see a bald eagle this summer. The bald eagle that I saw wasn't in a zoo and it wasn't confined to a cage. It was a real wild bald eagle and what a sight it was. We were camping at the Beaver Creek Campground, in Waneta, British Columbia, Canada, this past summer. Our campsite was only yards from the Columbia River. Sitting in my camp … Read entire article »

BC Day

BC DAY written by Debbie Williamson "Fawn," said Spot. "What are we going to do tomorrow?" "I don't know," said Fawn, playing his favourite computer game. "How about nothing?" "Nothing!" exclaimed Spot. "Are you kidding? Do you not know that tomorrow is a holiday?" "It is?" asked Fawn. "Yes it is," said Spot. "It is BC Day." "Cool," said Fawn. "I like the sound of that holiday, especially since we now live in BC." "Yeah me too," said Spot. "So are we going to do something tomorrow then?" "Sure," said Fawn. "But what?" "Well," said Spot. "Since BC Day is all about a celebration of the pioneers who built this province, I thought we could do something pioneerish." "Sure," said Fawn, laughing. "Like climb a mountain." "Yes," said Spot. "After all the pioneers would have had to climb a lot of mountains … Read entire article »

It is also an experience that is kind of haunting me now as I cannot get the urge to want to be there again, out of my mind. So, why am I so stuck on the mountains. It must be because the Canadian Rocky Mountains are grand and majestic and they have a beauty all of their own. … Read entire article »

Grizzly’s Picnic

GRIZZLY'S PICNIC written by Debbie Williamson While camping near Trail, BC in July of 2004, we left the campsite for one hour to buy some groceries in the nearest town. When we came back, we noticed that our picnic table had been moved. We didn’t think too much about it. We unloaded the grocery bags from our van and set them on the picnic table. “Where is our cooler?” asked my husband, with a confused look on his face. “What do you mean?” I asked. “The cooler was right underneath the picnic table when we left.” I bent down and took a look under the picnic table. “There is no cooler,” I said. “Well this is just great,” said my husband. “We have to get these groceries put away.” We noticed some movement in our tent and slowly walked … Read entire article »

Me and My Bald Eagle

ME AND MY BALD EAGLE written by Debbie Williamson Hi everyone! I want to tell you about my bald eagle. Now, he really isn't my bald eagle, but I can pretend that he is. Every day after work, I have about a half an hour wait for the bus to take me home. Across the highway from where I work is a river and at the bank of the river is two very tall trees. One afternoon, I was totally shocked to see a bald eagle sitting in the furthest tree. I watched him while I waited for the bus and he just sat there. It was quite a sight to see. He is the most beautiful eagle I have ever seen and he looks very healthy. See, for me, that eagle represents freedom … Read entire article »

Mountain Life

MOUNTAIN LIFE written by Debbie Williamson "Hey there Nolan," waved Mr. Henry from across the road. "How are things today?" "Things are great," said Nolan. "Dad just got back from the sales barn and he is very happy today." "Don't blame him," said Mr. Henry. "I bet he's glad that border is open now." "Definitely," said Nolan. "We were just about starving and Dad was even talking about selling the ranch." "Not good," said Mr. Henry. "Definitely not," said Nolan. "We needed the American border to be open to our beef. It was killing us. Anyway, Mr. Henry, I got to get back to my chores." "No problem," said Mr. Henry. "Tell your Dad I said hello." "I will," said Nolan. Nolan stood and watched Mr. Henry walk back into his house. He admired Mr. Henry. Mr. Henry might be … Read entire article »

My Freezing Cold Eagle

MY FREEZING COLD EAGLE written by Debbie Williamson It was a cold, blustery winter day in Kamloops, BC. My bald eagle was sitting in his tree right beside the South Thompson River. I call him my bald eagle only because I wish so much that he was mine. I have been watching that bald eagle each and every day for the last year and a half that I have lived here and I love watching him. However, this day, I felt so sorry for him. I mean it was -20 degrees Celsius and the wind was blowing so hard. "Hey Mr. Bald Eagle," I cried out to him. "Aren't you cold up there?" He looked right at me with his big bulgy eyes. "Yes," he said. "Of course I'm cold. Do you think it is … Read entire article »
