Story 136 – The Environment Bug

THE ENVIRONMENT BUG written by Debbie Williamson Six year old Sally was sitting on the grass in the park, eating a bag of potato chips. When she was finished with the bag, she threw it onto the ground. “What did you do that for?” asked a little green bug that happened to be sitting right beside her. “Who are you?” Sally asked the bug. “I’m the environment bug,” said the bug. “I help keep the environment clean.” “Well,” said Sally. “I’ve never heard of an environment bug before.” “That’s because I’m new,” said the bug. “Really,” said Sally. “You are a brand new bug.” “Yes,” said the bug. “I am a brand new bug.” “So,” said Sally. “What exactly do you do?” “Well,” said the bug. “I go around the world and try to keep the environment clean.” “That sounds like a … Read entire article »

Story 139 – Clean Water

CLEAN WATER written by Debbie Williamson “I am really thirsty,” said eight year old Dianne, one morning, during recess at school. “I need a drink.” Dianne went over to the water fountain, where several children were taking a drink of water. “Don’t drink this water,” Dianne heard a little voice say to her. Dianne looked down at the fountain and there, sitting on the spout was a little bug. “I know who you are,” said Dianne. “You’re the environment bug. I’ve seen you on television.” “Yes,” said the Environment Bug. “That is who I am.” “Why can’t I drink the water?” asked Dianne. “It’s contaminated,” said the Environment Bug. “It is!” exclaimed Dianne. “That is terrible. I’m going to tell the principal.” “Good idea,” said the Environment Bug, smiling. That was exactly what the Environment Bug was hoping would happen. He wanted … Read entire article »

Story 296 – The Environment Bug and Dust

THE ENVIRONMENT BUG AND DUST written by Debbie Williamson Hi everyone! I am the Environment Bug. I have noticed a lot of dust lately in my home. It seems the more I clean, the more dust I get. I do not like dust. Sometimes the dust gets in my nose and into my throat. Sometimes I get a dry scratchy feeling in my throat and it makes me cough. This is all because of the dust. It is terrible. I spoke to some of my neighbours and they informed me that they are having the same problem. “Dust everywhere!” exclaimed Mrs. Centipede. “I can’t seem to get rid of it!” “Terrible, terrible dust,” said Mrs. Ant. “The worst I have ever seen.” Walking back home, I was lucky enough to find the source of the dust. … Read entire article »

Story 385 – The Environment Bug and Clean Air

THE ENVIRONMENT BUG AND CLEAN AIR written by Debbie Williamson “Oh dear,” said Environment Bug early one morning, while going for his daily walk. “The air in this city is terrible.” Environment Bug lives in Toronto, Ontario. However, he just came back from a vacation in the mountains in British Columbia. “I should have stayed in BC,” said Environment Bug to himself. “The air was so clean and so fresh. I haven’t sniffed air like that ever, while living in Ontario.” Toronto, Ontario is known for smog. Often times, you can see a hazy cloud sitting low over the city. This cloud is filled with pollution. With over two million people living in the city it is no wonder. So many cars, trucks and factories are contributors to the smog. I never really had a problem … Read entire article »

Story 444 – Planting Trees on Earth Day

PLANTING TREES ON EARTH DAY written by Debbie Williamson “Tomorrow is Earth Day,” said Environment Bug, sitting at his kitchen table, reading the morning newspaper. “Earth Day is a very important day. The main purpose of Earth Day is to help clean up our environment and also to plant some trees. Planting trees is a very good idea because we lose a lot of trees each year by the logging industry and forest fires.” Environment Bug decided that he was going to clean up the park beside his house and also plant some trees for Earth Day. Environment Bug then put his newspaper into his recycle box and went outside. It was a warm day and therefore a lot of children were outside playing in the park. Environment Bug thought the children would be … Read entire article »

Story 453 – The Environment Bug Strikes Again

THE ENVIRONMENT BUG STRIKES AGAIN written by Debbie Williamson One hot, summer day, the Environment Bug was walking along the edge of a major highway when he noticed a car that had black smoke coming out from the back of it. The worst of it was that the wind was blowing the smoke right into his face. He started coughing. The Environment Bug went up to the driver of the car. “Excuse me,” said the Environment Bug, between coughs. “The exhaust on your car is choking me.” “And so,” said the driver. “What do I care?” “You are also polluting the air,” said the Environment Bug. “And so you think I care,” said the driver. “Look, you little insect. I have things to do today. I’m going to be late for work and if you don’t … Read entire article »

Story 483 – Our Environment

OUR ENVIRONMENT written by Debbie Williamson Hey everyone! This is the Environment Bug. Guess what I did on July 7, 2007! Just like the rest of you, I watched the Live Earth concert. I loved all the performances, especially the ones by my favorite bands and if you know me well, you will know I only have one favorite band, the Red Hot Chili Peppers. They were just awesome! Just like the rest of you, I sat in my living room, dancing and singing all my favorite songs at the top of my lungs. I loved it! After the concert was over, I got to thinking about the point of the concert and to me, and not just because I am the Environment Bug, the point I got out of it is that … Read entire article »

Story 524 – Don’t Litter

DON’T LITTER written by Debbie Williamson “Hi there!” exclaimed Environment Bug to a young boy sitting on a park bench. “Hello yourself,” said the young boy, who was eating a sandwich. “Nice day today,” said Environment Bug. “Yes,” said the boy, tossing the aluminum wrapper behind him, onto the ground. “It is a nice day.” “Why did you do that?” asked Environment Bug. “Do what?” asked the boy. “Throw your wrapper on the ground,” said Environment Bug. “Oh that,” said the boy. “I don’t know.” “You really shouldn’t do that,” said Environment Bug. “Why?” asked the boy. “Me and my friends do it all the time.” Just then a bird flew down and grabbed the wrapper in its beak. “For that reason,” said Environment Bug. “Now that poor bird is going to try eating that wrapper and could become very sick from it.” Luckily … Read entire article »
