Anticipation

ANTICIPATION written by Debbie Williamson Poor Mountain Sister sat in her room, reading her book. She couldn't really concentrate on it because she had other things on her mind. Tomorrow was Poor Mountain Sister's birthday and she was very excited about it. Her mother and father had promised her a birthday party. She thought about how pretty she was going to look at her birthday party in her new dress that Poor Mountain Mother had just sewn for her. She thought about her friends and how she was going to have so much fun with them. She thought about the food and the birthday cake. Oh, Poor Mountain Sister was so excited she couldn't think of anything else. The next morning Poor Mountain Sister got up very early in the morning. She wanted to … Read entire article »

Banana Bread

BANANA BREAD written by Debbie Williamson "Is anyone going to eat these bananas?" asked Poor Mountain Mother, pointing to a bunch of bananas that had been sitting on the counter for a few days.   "No thank you," said Poor Mountain Sister.   "I don't want any either," said Poor Mountain Brother.   Poor Mountain Mother took the bananas over to the counter and was busy baking up a storm. Pretty soon the aroma of freshly baked banana bread smelled really good.   "That smells so good," said Poor Mountain Brother.   "Its my banana bread," said Poor Mountain Mother.   "I didn't know that banana bread could smell so good," said Poor Mountain Sister.   Poor Mountain Mother gave her two children a slice of the freshly baked banana bread.   "I didn't know that banana bread could taste so good," said Poor Mountain Brother.   "How come we … Read entire article »

Canada Day Celebrations

CANADA DAY CELEBRATIONS written by Debbie Williamson "Tomorrow is Canada Day," said Poor Mountain Mother. "Yes," said Poor Mountain Father. "I have been thinking that we should maybe take a drive into the city tomorrow so the children can see the Canada Day fireworks." "Do we have enough money to do that?" asked Poor Mountain Mother. "I think so," said Poor Mountain Father. "What exactly would we need?" "Well," said Poor Mountain Mother. "I think we would just need money for gas. I can make us a picnic lunch that we can take with us." "That would be great," said Poor Mountain Father. "Okay children," said Poor Mountain Mother, just after dinner that night. "I want you two in bed early tonight." "But why?" asked Poor Mountain Sister. "It isn't a school night," said Poor Mountain Brother. "No," said Poor Mountain … Read entire article »

Christmas in the Mountains

CHRISTMAS IN THE MOUNTAINS written by Debbie Williamson The Poor Mountain Family were sitting down to breakfast one Sunday morning. They were enjoying some warm oatmeal because it was very cold outside. "Winter is definitely here," said Poor Mountain Mother, putting another log into the woodstove. "Yes it is," agreed Poor Mountain Father, not looking forward to spending the day outside chopping firewood. "And with winter comes Christmas," said Poor Mountain Sister, happily. "True," said Poor Mountain Mother. "I am glad you brought that up because I have something to discuss with you about Christmas." "What about Christmas?" asked Poor Mountain Brother. "Well Grandma and Grandpa want us to come to the city for Christmas this year," said Poor Mountain Mother. "The city!" exclaimed Poor Mountain Sister. "I don't want to have Christmas in the city." Christmas Snow

CHRISTMAS SNOW written by Debbie Williamson "Oh look," said Poor Mountain Sister. "It is snowing!" "Wonderful!" exclaimed Poor Mountain Mother, wiping her hands on her apron as she came to look out the window of the log cabin. "It is so beautiful!" "Yes," said Poor Mountain Sister. Poor Mountain Father came into the cabin, just covered from head to toe with snow. "Looks like we have our Christmas snow after all," he said. "Yes," said Poor Mountain Mother. "This is definitely Christmas snow." "What is the difference between regular snow and Christmas snow?" asked Poor Mountain Brother, coming into the kitchen. "Well," said Poor Mountain Mother. "Regular snow is just plain snow but Christmas snow is special. It is lighter and fluffier and just special." "Does Christmas snow only fall on Christmas?" asked Poor Mountain Sister. "Christmas snow usually falls either … Read entire article »

Christmas with no Money

CHRISTMAS WITH NO MONEY written by Debbie Williamson Poor Mountain Mother got up early one morning, about a week before Christmas. She was waiting anxiously for Poor Mountain Father to get up. She wanted to discuss Christmas with him before the children got up. Poor Mountain Mother and Poor Mountain Father just realized that they were not going to have any money for Christmas gifts this year. Poor Mountain Father got laid off unexpectedly from work about a week ago. "Good morning dear," said Poor Mountain Mother, pouring Poor Mountain Father a cup of coffee. "Good morning," said Poor Mountain Father. "I have come up with an idea for Christmas," said Poor Mountain Mother. "And, it won't even cost us anything." "I'm all ears," said Poor Mountain Father. "Okay," said Poor Mountain Mother. "You are off work from … Read entire article »

Falling Snow

FALLING SNOW written by Debbie Williamson Poor Mountain Mother was lying in bed on cool November morning. She had just returned home from the hospital and had a cast put on her foot. She had broken her foot early that morning when she had tripped on the kitchen mat. "Now," said Poor Mountain Father, coming in to check up on her. "You just stay put. Doctors orders." "Yes," said Poor Mountain Mother. "I know." Poor Mountain Mother looked out the bedroom window once Poor Mountain Father had left the room. She saw that it had started to snow. "Oh my!" exclaimed Poor Mountain Mother. "The first snowfall of the season and I am missing it." She watched the snow from her bedroom window and then just could not stand it any longer. "It is really difficult for the children to go trick-or-treating here in the mountains so, I was thinking, we should have a little party for them instead."
