Freddy Frog

FREDDY FROG written by Debbie Williamson Hi! I'm Chester Chipmunk. Today, I'm going to go visit my new friend, Freddy Frog. Freddy Frog lives in a swamp near my house. He is a pretty neat friend. Why don't you come along to Freddy's with me. "Freddy! Freddy! Where are you?" I called when I got to his house. "I've brought some of my friends for you to meet!" "Here I am, Chester," said Freddy, hopping all over the swamp. "Come on!" "You'll have to come over here," I said. "You have to remember that I can't hop around in the water like you can." "Oh yes," said Freddy. "I keep forgetting that you don't have the same hind legs that I do!" "No," I said. "I also don't have webbed feet, either." "That's true," said Freddy. "Wait right … Read entire article »

Little Oak Tree

LITTLE OAK TREE written by Debbie Williamson It had been raining off and on in the park all day. A little acorn plopped onto the ground. The wind had lifted him from the security and comfort of his home, a big oak tree. The little acorn was feeling rather dismal and was pleased when the sun finally did come out. Once the rain had stopped, the acorn saw dogs everywhere in the park. They were running through mud puddles. Some had balls in their mouths and some had bones. One particular dog, who happened to be carrying a bone, was sniffing the ground. "He is getting awfully close to me," the acorn said. "Oh no! Now he is throwing dirt at me! I can't see anything under here. What am I going to do?" The … Read entire article »

May with No Flowers

MAY WITH NO FLOWERS written by Debbie Williamson "Mommy, when is the sun ever going to shine!" exclaimed five year old, Jamie. "I want to go outside and play." "It's pretty cold out today," said Mommy. "However, I think that you could go outside and play for a little while. You have to dress warmly, though." "Okay," said Jamie. "Do you want to come outside too?" "You know something," Mommy said. "It's been a long time since I've gone outside to play with you. Yes, let's do that." "Oh goodie!" exclaimed Jamie, excitedly. Jamie and Mommy got dressed in their warm, winter clothing. They were on their way out the door, when Mommy spotted the calendar. "Look Jamie," said Mommy. "It's been so cold that we forgot to change the calendar. It's now May." Mommy took her gloves off … Read entire article »

Pretty Spring Flowers

PRETTY SPRING FLOWERS   written by Debbie Williamson     The Troll family wanted spring to come. They couldn't wait to see the pretty spring flowers. They were so tired of seeing snow. “Troll Mother!” exclaimed Troll Sister. “When can we go outside and play?” “When the snow turns into pretty spring flowers,” said Troll Mother. “Well, when will that be?” asked Troll Brother, standing at the kitchen doorway, listening to his mother and sister talking. Troll Sister and Troll Brother were getting anxious for spring to come. This past winter had been a long one. There was a lot of snow and it was very cold. “I want there to be pretty spring flowers when I go outside to play,” said Troll Sister. "I love pretty pink flowers the most." “Not pink,” said Troll Brother. “Pink is boring. Pick something nice … Read entire article »

Shadows Today

SHADOWS TODAY written by Debbie Williamson Today is a blustery cold winters day. The thermometer has dipped to -30 degrees C. That is very cold. I woke up in my den this morning, underneath the ground. It is usually nice and warm for me here but not today. Everything is a little frosty to the touch. I grabbed my fur coat from the chair beside my bed and stuffed it under the blankets with me. Soon, I started to feel some warmth come back to me. While still under the blankets, I quickly got dressed. I put a huge log on the fire and myself a cup of steaming hot chocolate. Soon, I was toasty warm. The warmth was beginning to make me drowsy, however. I started drifting off to sleep. Suddenly, an invisible alarm clock … Read entire article »

Spring Cleaning

SPRING CLEANING written by Debbie Williamson The favourite time of year for most farm animals is spring. Spring is a time for the sun to start getting warmer. It is a time for the warm spring rains. It is the time of year for the grass to turn green, for the flowers to start blooming and the leaves to start coming out on the trees. "Smell that fresh spring air," said Mrs. Duck, standing just outside of the barn. "It looks to me like spring is finally here." "Yes," said Slow-Poke to his mother. "It is definitely spring." Mrs. Duck grabbed the broom and dustpan and headed back inside. "Come on," said was Mrs. Duck. "There is lots of work to be done." "What kind of work?" asked Slow-Poke, confused. "Spring cleaning," said Mrs. Duck. "Okay," said Slow-Poke. "I … Read entire article »

Spring in the City

SPRING IN THE CITY written by Debbie Williamson This is Cecil City. I am one of the Canadian Brothers. I live in Toronto, Ontario. It has been a long, cold winter and I am so looking forward to spring. I have a little space in my backyard that I want to plant some flowers. I am looking forward to doing this. I will be able to get some fresh air as it will give me an excuse to get outside. Living in the city, especially a city like Toronto, you really do need an excuse to go outside because there are so many things that you can do indoors. I was very pleased to receive my seed catalog in the mail one afternoon when I got home from work. The seed catalog is like … Read entire article »

Spring in the Mountains

SPRING IN THE MOUNTAINS written by Debbie Williamson Hi everyone! This is Mountain Mike. I live in British Columbia, Canada, in the mountains. It has been a rather cold and long winter. We had quite a bit of snow this winter too. I am so looking forward to spring. I love spring and I especially love spring in the mountains. During spring, there is a flurry of activity in the mountains. Wildflowers are sprouting everywhere, trees are growing their leaves and birds are singing. The weather in the mountains during early spring can be a little iffy at times. We still sometimes get some cold arctic air coming down from the north. This can result in snow in the upper mountainous elevations. As a matter of fact, it can snow at any time of … Read entire article »

Spring Safety

SPRING SAFETY written by Debbie Williamson Hi everyone! I'm the Safety Kid. I recently went to British Columbia to visit with my friend Mountain Mike. Yes, you guessed right. Mountain Mike lives in the mountains. I wanted to make sure that my friend was safe. From what I could see on my visit with Mountain Mike, things were pretty safe. Mountain Mike knew to stay away from fast flowing waters. He knew it was very dangerous and he knew that the water could sweep him away within seconds. Mountain Mike knew to wear proper safety gear when he went for walks in the forest. He also knew enough to wear the proper clothing. Even though it is spring, the weather in the mountains could change at any second. Mountain weather is very unpredictable. I had … Read entire article »
