August in the Mountains

AUGUST IN THE MOUNTAINS written by Debbie Williamson Hello everyone! This is Mountain Mike from British Columbia, Canada. It is the month of August here now and it is very hot.   August is the time of year that we folks in the mountains get out and enjoy the hot weather and fresh mountain air. August is the time of year that a lot of outdoor activities take place.   I like to spend my August days at the lake. I like to go fishing a lot. It is very relaxing to be out in the middle of the lake on a hot day in a boat. There is nothing like it.   I usually go fishing at the crack of dawn, just before the sun comes up. I usually see a bald eagle soar in the sky, … Read entire article »

Billy’s Surprise Beach Concert

BILLY'S SURPRISE BEACH CONCERT written by Debbie Williamson "Billy, did you hear about the concert tonight?" asked Diane, as she was preparing dinner. "It is supposed to be fantastic!" "A concert tonight!" Billy exclaimed, with a sheepish look on his face. "No, I haven't heard any such thing. Where is it?" "It's down at the beach," said Diane. "It starts around 7 p.m." "Gee Diane," said Billy. "That sounds like fun. Do you want to go?" "I'd love to go, but don't you feel left out," said Diane. "Left out!" exclaimed Billy. "Why would I feel left out?" "They didn't include you in the concert," said Diane. "Are you not upset?" "No, I'm not upset," said Billy, smiling. "Besides, I have tickets for tonight. I can't sing and watch the concert at the same time, can I?" "I guess not," … Read entire article »

Canadian Summer

CANADIAN SUMMER written by Debbie Williamson Hi everyone! This is Mountain Mike. I live in the mountains in British Columbia, Canada. A lot of people think that British Columbia only comes alive in the winter time because of the ski season. Skiing is a big thing in BC however, so is fishing and hiking. During the summer months, I love to hike into the mountains. I love going right to the very top and just looking over the edge. I get such a rush looking down and seeing the river below look like a little dotted line and full size cars looking smaller than toy cars. I've been right to the top of the mountain, right where the cloud meets the sky and a few times I have even been up higher than … Read entire article »

Fawn and Mosquitoes

FAWN AND MOSQUITOES written by Debbie Williamson The sun was blistering hot at the Hansen farm one August afternoon. Fawn and Spot were standing underneath an old apple tree. They were trying to get some much needed relief from the swarms of mosquitoes that were around them. "Ah Spot!" exclaimed Fawn, irritably. "These mosquitoes are driving me crazy. I can't stand them any longer!" "If you would just settle down," said Spot. "They might not bother you as much. Look, I don't have too many around me." "You've got enough of them," said Fawn. "Well, maybe I do," said Spot. "How come they aren't bothering you as much?" asked Fawn. "Mosquitoes are just something that we have to live with," said Spot. "There is no sense getting all frustrated about them." "OUCH!" cried Fawn as a mosquito just bit … Read entire article »

Fern Valley

FERN VALLEY written by Debbie Williamson Have you ever been to a place called Fern Valley? I was there a few times, I think. See, I don't know if I was ever there, or if it is a place that I have just been dreaming about. I don't know if I was there when I was a little girl, or if I was there just yesterday. Fern Valley is a magical, mystical place. It is lush in its greenery and is so beautiful and sunny and oh, so warm. It never gets cold in Fern Valley. Just where is Fern Valley? That I don't really know. Maybe it doesn't even exist. Maybe, it is just a place that is in the back of my mind. Nothing bad ever happens in Fern Valley. Nobody ever gets … Read entire article »

Green, Green, Green

GREEN, GREEN, GREEN written by Debbie Williamson "Look how lush and green everything is outside," said Chester Chipmunk, looking out of the window of his home. "I think that I am going to go outside and play." "Yes," said Suzie Chipmunk, Chester's sister. "It looks so beautiful. Lets go and play." Chester and Suzie were very excited about the fact that everything was so green because it had been a long, cold winter and when spring finally did come, it was cold and damp. Summer finally came and so far it was turning out to be the best summer of all. "Oh look at all the long, green grass out here," said Chester. "I'm going to roll in it!" "Me too!" said Suzie. Both Chester and Suzie laughed as they rolled and frolicked through the grass. "Ouch!" Chester … Read entire article »

In the Summer

GRAMPY’S LITTLE GREEN CAR IN THE SUMMER written by Debbie Williamson “Oh my!” exclaimed Grampy, looking out of the window of his little cottage. “The sun is shining so bright! It must be summer!” Grampy loved summer weather very much. Grampy loved the bright sunshine. Grampy loved the heat but more than anything at all, Grampy loved his little green car. “I must get out my little green car and go for a drive!” exclaimed Grampy. Grampy went into the garage and there, sitting right in front of him was his pride and joy, his little green car. Grampy smiled from ear to ear at just the sight of it. He had spent the last few rainy days washing it and shining it with a bright new coat of wax. Grampy had been waiting for … Read entire article »

Little Willow

LITTLE WILLOW written by Debbie Williamson "Little Willow," called Rain Man, her grandfather. "Come quick!" Rain Man was the medicine man of the village. He was looking after Little Willow's father, Brave One, who lay injured in a cave. Little Willow dropped the pieces of leather that she had been trying to sew together to make a pair of moccasins with. She quickly ran to the mouth of the cave. It was very hot and humid in the village on this particular summer day. The coolness of the cave felt good on Little Willow's sweat soaked body. Looking into the eyes of Rain Man, who was sitting beside Brave One, Little Willow feared the worst. "My father," cried Little Willow. "Will he ever get better?" The wrinkled eyes of Rain Man grew harsher as he looked down at … Read entire article »

Poison Ivy

POISON IVY written by Debbie Williamson "Timmy!" called Mrs. Nelson. "Supper is ready." "I'm coming, Mom," Timmy answered. "I have to go now, Billy." "See you tomorrow," said Billy. "You bet," said Timmy. As Timmy walked home, he happened to spot a shiny object on the side of the road. He bent over to pick it up. It turned out to be an old coin. "Wow!" exclaimed Timmy, to himself. "I'll have to take this home and show Dad." That evening, Timmy showed the old coin to his father. "Pretty impressive coin," his father said. "Where did you find it?" "On the side of the road," said Timmy, proudly. "Here, take this coin and put it in a safe place," said Mr. Nelson, handing coin back to him. "Maybe it'll be a good luck charm." "Do you think so?" asked Timmy. "Well," said … Read entire article »

Pot of Gold

POT OF GOLD written by Debbie Williamson Back in the early 1900's, there lived an old man called Gus and his donkey, Willie. Gus was a lonely sort of man because he didn't have any family. Gus was a mountain man. He didn't know too much about anything else but he sure knew his mountains. He knew every name of every tree and every name of every animal that lived on his mountain. One day, Gus was low on his luck. He had gambled his life savings away that night before, in the town nearby. "Ah Willie!" exclaimed Gus sadly to Willie, as he loaded his few belongings onto his back. "I've been such a fool, gambling and boozing all my hard earned money away. What could I have been thinking of? Well, old boy, … Read entire article »
