20 Below Zero

20 BELOW ZERO written by Debbie Williamson "Oh my!" exclaimed Mommy, looking at the thermometer. "The temperature is dropping fast. I'd better call Jimmy in. He's going to freeze to death out there." Jimmy was outside building a snowman. He was having a lot of fun. However, Jimmy noticed that some frost was beginning to form on the end of his mittens. "Oh no," said Jimmy, dropping the stick that he was holding onto. "It's starting to get colder out here. It has to be at least 20 below zero." Just then, Jimmy noticed that a flock of birds flew over top of him. "Oh, the poor birds must be getting cold, too," said Jimmy. "Jimmy!" exclaimed Mommy. "Come on inside now. It's getting too cold out here." Jimmy saw his mother's breath. "Oh boy," said Jimmy. "It sure … Read entire article »

A Cold, Frosty Day

A COLD, FROSTY DAY written by Debbie Williamson “I'm going outside to play,” said Jenny, getting up from the couch. “Dress warm!” shouted her mother. “I'm going to wear the new sweater Neon Cop bought me yesterday,” said Jenny. Jenny went upstairs to her room and put on her new black sweater that her friend, Neon Cop bought her yesterday at the mall. “This sweater is really warm,” said Jenny to her mother, when she came back downstairs. “It's a beautiful sweater,” said her mother, popping a huge chocolate cake into the oven. “You are one lucky girl!” It had been almost a year since Jenny had first met Neon Cop. She had been at the beach, crying, because her mother had left her alone. Her mother had to go for a job interview and not knowing what … Read entire article »

A Nice Long Walk

A NICE LONG WALK written by Debbie Williamson Fawn and Spot were taking a nice long walk. It was a beautiful warm day, despite the fact that it was only February. Fawn was walking a few feet ahead of Spot. He noticed a tulip poking its way out of the ground. He bent over to pick it when he noticed a deer standing in the field right beside him. By this time Spot had caught up to Fawn and she stood watching the deer too. "What a beautiful sight! ''whispered Spot to Fawn. "It sure is," said Fawn. "But it looks like something is moving in the grass right beside it." "Oh my!" exclaimed Spot when she noticed what had poked its head up out of the grass. It is a baby fawn." ''It certainly is cute," … Read entire article »

A Visit to the Arctic

A VISIT TO THE ARCTIC written by Debbie Williamson "Hi there boys and girls! I sure hope you are nice and warm under all those blankets. I'm not. I'm way up here in the Arctic. It's very cold up here!" Travellin' Rick had arrived in the Arctic about a month before. He was staying with an Inuit family. There were four members of this particular family, Iza, an 80 year old grandmother, George, the father, Sarah, the mother and Sally, the two month old infant. Because Travellin' Rick was a strong man, he was helping George throughout his stay. George was glad to have an extra hand around. The Arctic can be a very difficult and lonely place to live. The Arctic is situated right at the very top of our planet. Hardly any plants … Read entire article »

April Fool’s in January

April Fool's in January written by Debbie Williamson "Hey Spot," said Fawn looking out the kitchen window of the barn. "It is snowing really bad outside." "Really," said Spot. "I watched the weather this morning and they said we might get a few centimeters but I don't think they said we are going to get a lot." Spot went over to the window and looked out. It wasn't snowing at all. "Fawn," said Spot. "You are crazy. I thought you were serious." "Spot," said Fawn. "April Fools." "You can't do April Fools jokes in January," said Spot. "But I already did," said Fawn. "Oh Fawn," said Spot. "You really are crazy." "No I'm not," said Fawn, looking out the window again. "This time it is really snowing." "And you expect me to believe you," said Spot. "Well I don't. I'm going … Read entire article »

Baby Penguin

BABY PENGUIN written by Debbie Williamson Hello everyone! I'm a baby emperor penguin. I live way down south, at the south pole, way down where it is freezing cold most of the year. I live in the Antarctic. Most people don't know very much about penguins and they may think that we have an easy life. However, easy is not in our vocabulary. I hatched, under a thick fold of skin, in the depths of freezing cold weather and I'm not just talking just below zero either. I'm talking about temperatures in the range of -40 degrees to -50 degrees. I was hatched by my father, not my mother. While I am still in the egg, my mother rolls me out in the freezing cold temperatures and my father rolls me underneath him. … Read entire article »

Billy Troll’s Winter Concert

BILLY TROLL'S WINTER CONCERT written by Debbie Williamson “It is cold outside today,” said Billy Troll, rubbing his hands together to keep them warm. “You should have worn your gloves,” said Dianne Troll, taking Billy’s cold hands in her gloved ones. “I know,” said Billy. “I just didn’t think it was going to be this cold!” “We’ll be at the practice hall soon,” said Dianne. Billy was relieved when he saw the practice hall out of the corner of his eye. He was so looking forward to practising the his upcoming winter concert. “Come on Dianne,” said Billy. “I’ll race you.” The two Troll friends raced to the front door of the hall. “Come on slow-poke,” said Billy, waiting at the front door. “I’m freezing.” Once inside the hall, Billy soon warmed up by singing and playing on his guitar. “Oh no!” … Read entire article »

Bundled Up

BUNDLED UP written by Debbie Williamson "Hey Spot," said Fawn. "See you later. I'm going outside to play." "Fawn!" exclaimed Spot. "It is really cold outside and I mean really, really cold. Make sure you bundle up. I don't want to see you get sick." Fawn went outside and he realized that it was freezing cold and could not stand being outside for very long. The cold bit at his ears and his nose felt like it was going to fall right off. He went back inside and because Spot was vacuuming, he just went into his room and he fell asleep. "Gee," said Spot, about an hour later. "Fawn sure has been outside for a long time. I sure hope he bundled up. I'd better go outside and see what he is doing." Spot was … Read entire article »

Chester Chipmunk’s Best Winter

CHESTER CHIPMUNK'S BEST WINTER written by Debbie Williamson “It is getting colder outside,” said Suzie Chipmunk to her brother. “Unfortunately winter is coming,” said Chester. “I don’t really like winter,” said Suzie, shivering at just the thought of it. “I don’t mind it too much,” said Chester. “What are you talking about?” asked Suzie, laughing at her brother’s comment. “I know that you don’t like winter.” “But this winter is going to be different,” said Chester. "It is going to be the best winter!" “Well,” said Suzie. “I don’t know how this winter is going to be any different. It is going to be cold and we are going to get tons of snow. Winter is terrible.” Chester pulled an envelope out of his pocket and handed it to his sister. “What is this?” asked Suzie, curiously, as she opened … Read entire article »

Cold Feet

COLD FEET written by Debbie Williamson "Come on now Willie," coaxed Gus. "We've got to keep moving! We can't stop now. There's a snowstorm coming!" Willie, Gus' two year old donkey, wouldn't budge. "What's the matter with you Willie?" asked Gus, beginning to get angry. "You've never acted like this before. We have to keep moving! You got cold feet or something, Willie!" Try as he might, Gus could not coax Willie to move an inch. He tried everything in his power to make Willie move. "They say that donkey's are stubborn," said Gus, a few minutes later. "But this is ridiculous, Willie. We are going to have to spend the night right here by the looks of things. I'm getting cold, Willie, aren't you? I'm going to build a camp-fire." Gus started a roaring fire and … Read entire article »
