HOOT! HOOT!
Farmer Jim was out in the fields, ploughing his
corn field.
"Hoot! Hoot!" cried an owl, flying over the field.
"Oh be quiet!" exclaimed Farmer Jim, angrily. "I can't concentrate on my
ploughing with you hollering your fool head off!"
The owl flew away.
"Ahoo Ahoo!" a wolf howled in the far distance.
"Oh how can I get any work done around here," yelled Farmer Jim. "I moved out
here to the country to get some peace and quiet and all I hear is noise!"
The wolf ran away.
Farmer Jim continued to do his ploughing. This time, it was so quiet that he
couldn't concentrate at all. Wearily, he got down from his tractor and went into
the house.
"Well hello," said Farmer Jim's wife. "It looks like you've had a terrible day.
How about a nice slice of freshly baked cherry pie with a nice big scoop of
home-made vanilla ice-cream on top?"
"Maybe that will perk me up," said Farmer Jim, sadly.
Farmer Jim took a big bite of the pie and ice-cream.
"Oh, this tastes so good!" exclaimed Farmer Jim.
"Yes," said his wife. "And imagine, every bit of it was made right here on the
farm. It sure makes it worthwhile living out in the country, doesn't it!"
"It sure does," said Farmer Jim, wiping his mouth on his handkerchief.
Whistling
to himself, he went back out to the field to finish his ploughing.
"Caw! Caw! Caw!" sang a huge crow, overhead.
"Well," said Farmer Jim. "It sure is nice to hear the crows calling."
"Swish, swish," went the branches of a nearby tree, where a doe and her fawn had
just walked.
"What a beautiful sound!" exclaimed Farmer Jim. "How could anyone ever live in
the city?"
"Hoot! Hoot!" cried the same owl that had flown over the field earlier.
"Ahoo! Ahoo!" howled the same wolf.
"Oh!" exclaimed Farmer Jim. "That is music to my ears."
