SEPTEMBER IN THE MOUNTAINS Mountain Mike was sitting on the porch of his log cabin, looking around at the landscape. He had beautiful mountains on one side of him and a winding river on the other. His land was right in between. The mountains were now a more golden colour and the river was teaming with salmon. It was now September in the mountains.
The temperature was in the high teens to low twenties. It rains on the odd days but for the most part it is warm. It is good weather as far as Mountain Mike is concerned. He has a lot of work to do to prepare for winter. He has firewood to split, vegetables from the garden to harvest and some outdoor repairs that need to be done.
Mountain Mike is grateful that he does have the time right now to do everything he needs to. Winter can be tough on many Canadians and winter in the mountains can even be tougher. The weather can change drastically from one minute to the next depending on the altitude. Mountain Mike has seen it from the minute he looks out the window in the morning and then goes to put his boots on, the weather has changed from a bright blue sky to the worst snow storm in history. Mountain Mike knows that in order to get through a winter in the mountains, he must be prepared. The better prepared he is, the better he will fare the winter.
