Mother and Father woke up early one Sunday morning in their little cottage in southern Scotland. They enjoyed Sunday mornings because they were able to sleep in a little and they could enjoy a nice hearty breakfast together before they set off to do their chores for the day.

“I sure would like to know what keeps happening to all my leftovers,” said Mother  one morning while she started to cook breakfast. “Not that I mind because I would rather that they be eaten than have to throw them out.”

“Yes,” said Father. “I do wonder what happens to them. There was that big chunk of ham left over the other night and it disappeared.”

“I guess I don’t have to clean the kitchen floor or dust the house again today either,” said Mother. “It is like someone or something is cleaning up the house for me while we are sleeping.”

“Maybe they are just thankful for the ham and other foods that they are eating,” laughed Father.

“Yes,” said Mother, laughing. “Maybe they are.”

What Mother and Father didn’t know is that while they were sleeping there was a little hobgoblin that visited them. He lived in the attic of their house and they never even knew he was there. The hobgoblin that lived with them had lived in the house for hundreds of years. He slept during the day and only wandered around the house at night when everyone was sleeping.

One night, the hobgoblin was cleaning the kitchen floor and he saw a hunk of ham sitting on the counter. It smelled so good that he had to stop what he was doing and take a big chunk of it. He gobbled that up and it was so good that he had to eat another chunk. Soon, he had eaten the whole chunk of ham.

“That was so good,” said the hobgoblin to himself. “I will do extra work around the house tonight to make up for what I had just eaten.”

The hobgoblin had the kitchen floor sparkling in no time at all and then he decided that he would dust the whole kitchen. He soon saw the sun coming up so he decided that he better get to bed.

A lot of people think that hobgoblins are evil and for the most part they can be. However, there are good little hobgoblins like this one that appreciate what they get in life and they don’t take the things they get for granted. We could take a lesson from this little creature. We need to not take the things that we get for granted and we need to appreciate everything that we do have.

One Saturday morning, Mommy got up extra early and she started to put Arrow’s leash on him.

“Where are we going Mommy?” asked Arrow excitedly dancing all over the bed.

“We are going to Fun Land today,” said Mommy.

Arrow was so happy and so excited. He couldn’t believe that he was going to get to go to Fun Land.

“Now,” said Mommy to Arrow, when she put him in the van. “You must be a good boy at Fun Land. There are going to be lots of people there and lots of other animals there. I don’t want you to get hurt so you must promise that you will stay close to me.”

“I promise,” said Arrow, too excited to actually listen to all of what Mommy had just said to him.

Arrow gave Mommy a big kiss as she let him out of the van at Fun Land. There were a lot of people there in the parking lot but Arrow didn’t even pay any attention to any of them. He smelled some pretty amazing smells and his tummy was grumbling from all of the different things he smelled.

Mommy saw someone that she recognized in the parking lot and she started talking to them. Arrow couldn’t stand it any longer. He had to go and get some of that great food. He managed to sneak away from Mommy and he wandered off into Fun Land.

Arrow got to the gate and he noticed that there were dogs all over the park. Good thing was though that those dogs were on a leash, just like he was supposed to be. What he didn’t see though was one small dog that was behind him that wasn’t on a leash. The small dog barked and Arrow jumped about twenty feet in the air. Arrow was scared so he started walking through the gate to the entrance of the park but luckily for Arrow, one of the guards saw him and went over and picked him up.

“Now,” said the guard to Arrow. “Just where do you think you are going?”

“Fun Land,” said Arrow, purring loudly.

“Not without your owner you aren’t,” said the guard.

Arrow’s tummy was growling so loud that he could hear it over his own purrs. The guard heard it too. The guard gave Arrow some food and to Arrow it was the best food he had ever tasted. Arrow gobbled it up as quickly as he could.

The guard heard a knock on the door and he went to answer it. Arrow could see him Mommy standing at the entrance to the door and she was crying.

“I have lost my cat,” cried Mommy.

“Describe him to me,” said the guard.

“Well,” said Mommy. “He purrs really loudly.”

“I see,” said the guard. “When he gets hungry, does his tummy growl louder than his purrs.”

“Oh my yes!” exclaimed Mommy.

“Is this your cat?” asked the guard, handing Arrow to her.

“Oh my!” exclaimed Mommy, hugging Arrow tightly. “Yes, this is my cat!”

“Now just make sure he doesn’t get away from you again,” said the guard. “There are dogs here in Fun Land too.”

“You will be a good boy right Arrow?” Mommy asked him.

“Yes,” purred Arrow. “I promise I will.”

Arrow and Mommy had a great day at Fun Land. Arrow got to eat lots of different kind of foods and he got to play lots of fun cat games. He was very tired that night and he slept that whole night through.

“Who is talking?” asked Marty.

“It is us,” said one of the voices.

“But who are you?” asked Marty.

“We are the pumpkins,” said the same voice.

Marty looked down. He saw the pumpkins were talking to each other. Marty shook his head and continued on his way.

“Mother,” said Marty, when he reached his home.

“What is it?” asked Mother, who was in the kitchen preparing dinner.

“Do pumpkins talk?” asked Marty.

“Now Marty,” said Mother, shaking her head at him. “You know that pumpkins don’t talk. Go wash up for dinner.”

Mother didn’t believe Marty and the reason she didn’t believe him was because he was always coming home with some story or another to tell. Just the other night he told his Mother he heard ghosts in his bedroom.

Mother walked past the pumpkin field that very next day and she heard voices.
“Oh I think I must be hearing things,” she thought to herself, not wanting to believe that he five year old son was right.

She continued on and she continued to hear voices.

“Who is speaking?” she asked fearfully.

“It is us,” said one of the voices.

“But who are you?” asked Mother.

“We are pumpkins,” said the same voice.

“Pumpkins don’t talk,” said Mother.

“You are wrong,” said the voice. “We do talk. We are talking right now, aren’t we?”

Mother thought about what the pumpkin had just said.

“They must be talking,” said Mother. “Otherwise, I wouldn’t be able to hear them. Marty must have been right and if he was right about the pumpkins, then he could very well be right about the ghosts.”

That night, Mother sat in Marty’s bedroom with him long after she had read him a bed time story. She watched as Marty fell asleep. She watched as the moon started to shine through Marty’s bedroom window. All of a sudden, Mother saw the figure of a ghost standing in Marty’s bedroom.

“Okay ghost,” said Mother. “You are going to get out of Marty’s bedroom and you are going to leave him alone.”

The ghost looked shocked at Mother. Nobody had ever talked to him like that before. His feelings hurt, he left Marty’s room and never returned.

“Mother,” said Marty, the next evening. “I saw a scarecrow talking over by the fence this morning.”

“I believe you,” said Mother, smiling at Marty. “I do believe you.”
