Story 110 – Fawn and Nanny

FAWN AND NANNY

written by Debbie Williamson

(This story is dedicated to my mother, Mary-Anne Williamson, who passed away July 31, 2001. I love you Mom and I miss you terribly!)

Fawn was sleeping peacefully in his den, when a beautiful image of a bright white cross entered his mind. He opened his eyes and closed them again and the image was still there.

Fawn woke up from his afternoon nap. It was very hot and sticky. He went outside to see if he could get some relief from the heat. He could hear someone crying.

”I wonder who that could be,” said Fawn, walking toward the sound.

There, under an old maple tree, sat Jenny, crying her eyes out.

”Jenny!” exclaimed Fawn. ”What’s the matter?”

”Oh Fawn,” cried Jenny, wiping her eyes with the sleeve of her shirt. “It’s Nanny. She just died, not even five minutes ago!”

”Oh no!” yelled Fawn. ”Nanny can’t be dead. She was just here yesterday! No!”

”Fawn,” said Jenny. ”I know it’s hard to believe, but Nanny is gone. We just got back from the hospital. We were all with her. She’s gone!”

”No!” screamed Fawn. ”I don’t want Nanny to die. I love her.”

Fawn started crying, uncontrollably. Jenny stood up and wrapped her arms around Fawn. Grampy came from out of the house and wrapped his arms tightly around Fawn and Jenny. He was crying too.

”Why Grampy?” asked Fawn. ”Why did Nanny have to die?”

”Oh Fawn!” cried Grampy. ”Nanny suffered for a long, long time. She was so sick!”

”I’m going to miss her so much,” cried Fawn. ”I loved Nanny very much.”

”Fawn, we will all miss her very much,” said Jenny.

Grampy went back into the house. Jenny stayed outside with Fawn. Fawn walked around in a daze. He was very distraught.

”At least she isn’t suffering any more,” cried Jenny.

”Nanny’s in heaven,” said Fawn. “Just before I woke up, I had a vision of a bright white cross. Nanny sent me that sign so we would know she is going to be alright.”

Jenny felt at peace when Fawn told her this.

“You know something,” said Jenny. ”You had that vision just when Nanny died!”

”Yes,” said Fawn. ”You are right.”

Jenny sat on the ground and Fawn stretched out beside her.

”Sometimes life isn’t fair,” said Fawn. “Why did Nanny have to die?”

”We’ll never know the answer to that question,” said Jenny, sadly. ”Life is very unfair sometimes!”
