A COLD, FROSTY DAY
written by Debbie Williamson
“I'm going outside to play,” said Jenny, getting up from the couch.
“Dress warm!” shouted her mother.
“I'm going to wear the new sweater Neon Cop bought me yesterday,” said Jenny.
Jenny went upstairs to her room and put on her new black sweater that her friend, Neon Cop bought her yesterday at the mall.
“This sweater is really warm,” said Jenny to her mother, when she came back downstairs.
“It's a beautiful sweater,” said her mother, popping a huge chocolate cake into the oven. “You are one lucky girl!”
It had been almost a year since Jenny had first met Neon Cop. She had been at the beach, crying, because her mother had left her alone. Her mother had to go for a job interview and not knowing what to do with Jenny, she sat her down at the beach and told her she'd be right back. She had no way of knowing that she was going to be hit by a car.
Neon Cop, who was on patrol that night, had come across Jenny. He took good care of her while he looked for her mother, which was about a week later.
Jenny and Neon Cop had been inseparable since then.
“Don't be out too long,” said Mother. “Neon Cop is coming over for dinner!”
“So that's why you are baking the cake,” said Jenny, laughing, on her way outside.
Jenny found that it was very cold outside. She decided she would play outside anyway. There were still leaves on the ground that she could play with.
Jenny was so busy playing that she didn't hear the Neon Cop pull into the driveway.
“Hey kiddo,” said Neon Cop, when he saw Jenny in amongst the pile of leaves. “It's a good thing I got you that sweater yesterday.”
“Yeah, it's really keeping me nice and warm,” said Jenny, walking toward her friend.
"What's your Mother doing right now?" asked Neon Cop.
"She is cooking dinner," said Jenny. "And she is baking a huge chocolate cake!"
"Yummy!" exclaimed the Neon Cop. "Your mother is a good cook!"
"She's the best," said Jenny.
"She sure is," said the Neon Cop. "Jenny, do you think your Mom would marry me?"
''You are going to ask her tonight," said Jenny, excitedly.
"Yes I am," Neon Cop said nervously.
"Oh boy!" exclaimed Jenny. "This will be great! This means that you will be my step-dad."
"That is right," said Neon Cop.
Neon Cop and Jenny both went into the house, both giggling and with grins from ear to ear.
"You two are up to something," said Mother, turning around to see what all the commotion was.
"There," said Neon Cop, taking a small velvet box out of his pocket and handing it to April, Jenny's Mother.
"You caught us. We were up to something!"
"Oh my!" April gasped when she opened the box to find a beautiful diamond ring inside.
"April," said the Neon Cop, taking her hand into his. "Will you marry me?"
"Yes, I will," said April, nervously. "Yes, I will marry you!"
"Oh, Neon Cop," cried Jenny, hugging both him and her mother. "You have just made me the happiest person in this entire world.
"Me too!" cried April.
"That's where you're wrong," said Neon Cop. ''You two have just made me the happiest person of all!"
