Story 344 – The Desert Kid

THE DESERT KID

written by Debbie Williamson

“Hello!” exclaimed Fawn. “Who are you?”

Fawn and Spot were taking a walk through the mountains in British Columbia, Canada when they noticed someone walking along the side of the road. They had never seen this person before so it kind of intrigued them.

“My name is the Desert Kid,” said the person.

“Desert Kid?” asked Fawn, a bit confused.

“That is right, the Desert Kid,” said the Desert Kid. “Guess why people call me that?”

“Well,” said Spot. “It must be because you like the desert.”

“Close,” said the Desert Kid. “See I live in the desert.”

“You do?” asked Fawn.

“Yes,” said the Desert Kid. “And as a matter of fact, so do you?”

“What are you talking about?” asked Fawn. “We don’t live in a desert. We live in British Columbia, Canada.”

“But whereabouts in British Columbia?” asked the Desert Kid.

“Well,” said Fawn. “Let me think.”

“We actually live in the Okanagan Valley” said Spot.

“Yes,” said the Desert Kid. “The Okanagan Valley is actually a desert.”

“Wow!” exclaimed Spot.

“Yeah!” exclaimed Fawn. “That is so cool.”

“It actually isn’t cool,” said the Desert Kid, laughing. “It is actually boiling hot.”

After the Desert Kid left, Fawn and Spot stood thinking about what the Desert Kid had told them and they realized that the Desert Kid was right. They realized that they did indeed live in a desert.

“I mean,” said Fawn. “It does get very hot here. We have seen temperatures as high as 38 degrees Celsius. We do have dry weather. It isn’t damp here.”

“By all means it isn’t damp here,” said Spot. “A tiny drop of water would be soaked up by the hot sun in seconds and also, look at our landscape. Everything here looks dry and arrid.”

“True,” said Fawn. “Also I saw some cactus when we went for a walk up to Lac De Bois Grassland Park. Mind you they weren’t big cactus but they were definitely cactus.”

“Yes,” said Spot. “We also have rattle snakes that live in that park too.”

“I think this is so neat,” said Fawn. “We live in a desert.”

“Yes,” said Spot. “I think it is neat too and we don’t just live in any desert, we live in Canada’s only desert.”
