Story 394 – Poor Mountain Family’s Halloween

POOR MOUNTAIN FAMILY’S HALLOWEEN

written by Debbie Williamson

Poor Mountain Father was on his way home from work, one dark Halloween night, when he saw something that caught his attention. What he saw was a glowing object that seemed to be coming from a large tree. Poor Mountain Father walked over to the object and when he saw what it was he laughed so hard that he almost fell over.

“What are you?” asked Poor Mountain Father.

“I’m a ghost,” said the object.

“A real live ghost,” said Poor Mountain Father, shaking his head in disbelief.

“Yes,” said the ghost. “I’m a real live ghost. My name is Jack.”

Jack stuck his hand out for Poor Mountain Father to shake. Poor Mountain Father tried to shake it but couldn’t. Jack laughed at him.

“You can’t shake my hand,” laughed Jack. “It isn’t there. I’m invisible.”

“Oh yeah,” said Poor Mountain Father, feeling very foolish. “I guess that is true enough.”

“Listen,” said Jack. “Do you like have a family to get home to or something?”

“As a matter of fact, yes, I do,” said Poor Mountain Father. “They are waiting for me right now.”

“I was wondering if I could come home with you,” said Jack.  “See I’m kind of lonely this Halloween night.”

“A ghost being lonely,” said Poor Mountain Father. “Don’t you have anyone that you can scare?”

“No,” said Jack. “See, I’m an old ghost and I can’t scare anything anymore.”

“Really,” said Poor Mountain Father.

“Well,” said Jack. “Did I scare you?”

“No,” said Poor Mountain Father honestly. “You didn’t scare me one bit.”

“See,” said Jack. “I can’t scare anyone. Please, can I come with you? I won’t be a bother, I promise.”

“Okay,” said Poor Mountain Father. “I guess it wouldn’t hurt.”

Poor Mountain Father and Jack walked home. They walked into the house and Poor Mountain Sister, who was waiting for her Father to come home, burst out laughing.

“Poor Mountain Father brought home a ghost,” she laughed.

Poor Mountain Mother and Poor Mountain Brother came out into the kitchen and they started to laugh when they saw Jack.

“This is Jack,” said Poor Mountain Father. “He’s a ghost. He was lonely tonight so he wanted to spend sometime with us. I hope you don’t mind.”

“We don’t mind,” said Poor Mountain Mother. “I do have one problem though.”

“What is that?” asked Poor Mountain Father.

“How do you entertain a ghost?” asked Poor Mountain Mother.

“Oh don’t worry about that,” said Poor Mountain Father. “I’m sure he will entertain us.”
