Travellin’ Rick Went to School

TRAVELLIN' RICK WENT TO SCHOOL

Hi everyone! I just wanted to tell you about my wonderful adventure. Yesterday I went to school. Now, I know what you are thinking! And, no, I am not too old to go to school. Besides, I went to school as a guest speaker. It just so happens that the Grade 4 class were doing a project on the Arctic, and since I spent sometime up there, I was chosen to talk to the class.

To prepare for my big day, I took down some notes of things that I could remember about that cold, desolate place, like the polar bears I saw and the igloo I stayed in. The thing I remembered the most about that trip were the sled dogs that carried me and my belongings across the vast wasteland. I had a great team of Siberian Huskies. They were beautiful dogs.

Next, I rummaged around in the basement of my house and found the pair of caribou mittens that Iza had made for me. I rememberd how warm those mittens had kept my hands in the below 40°C weather. I went upstairs to my bedroom and got the photo albums out. After searching through several of them, I finally found the one I was looking for. It was a picture of Iza, George, Sarah and Sally. They were the family I had stayed with. I had taken lots of photographs of my Arctic adventure.

Yesterday morning, I was a little nervous when I went to school, but as soon as I saw all the children, or should I say, as soon as they all saw me, I felt much better.

“Look guys,” one of the Grade 4 students said. “That’s Travellin’ Rick. He is the one that is speaking today!”

“He’s the one that goes on all the neat adventures!” said another of the students.

“Yeah,” said the first student. “He’s my hero!”

“Mine too!” said the second boy.

My presentation to the class went very well. As a matter of fact, it went so well that Mr. Brown, the teacher, asked if I would come back when the students were going to be studying space.
