THANKSGIVING

“I am so depressed,” said Fawn.
“Why?” asked Spot. “Today is Thanksgiving. We are having turkey and pumpkin pie.”
“That is why I am depressed,” said Fawn. “Not about the turkey and the pumpkin pie but about the fact that it is Thanksgiving.”
“I understand,” said Spot, knowing that Fawn was actually depressed about the family situation and not the actual holiday itself. “You know that Grampy would come if he could. However, BC is a long way from Ontario.”
“Yes,” said Fawn. “It’s not just Grampy. It is the fact that Nanny, Great-Grandpa and Great-Grandma are not here anymore either.”
“Well,” said Spot. “Just because they are not here physically, doesn’t mean they can’t be here spiritually.”
“Umm, I guess,” said Fawn. “It isn’t the same though. I mean we can’t talk to them or see them.”
“You can talk to them in your mind,” said Spot. “And as far as seeing them, try to remember the good times that we’ve had with them.”
“Well,” said Fawn. “I can remember one time that Grampy had to cook Thanksgiving dinner because Nanny wasn’t well and Great-Grandma was coming. I remember that he cooked the turkey upside down.”
“I remember that too,” said Spot, laughing. “Grampy is a pretty silly guy.”
“I remember Nanny yelling at him and telling him to get the stuffing out of the turkey before he got it all greasy,” said Fawn, now laughing.
“Yes,” said Spot. “Nanny was so upset at him for that.”
“Great-Grandma didn’t know a thing about it though,” laughed Fawn. “She thought the turkey was just perfect.”
“Yes,” said Spot. “She did.”
Fawn felt better after doing some reminiscing about the good old days with Grampy, Nanny and Great-Grandma.
“Okay,” said Fawn, a few hours later at the dinner table. “I’m hungry, where’s the turkey.”
“I see you are feeling better about Thanksgiving,” said Spot.
“Much,” said Fawn, helping himself to a large turkey leg. “Where’s the gravy?”
“Okay,” said Spot. “You are back to your normal self again. Now, I have a surprise for you.”
“What is it?” asked Fawn.
“Well,” said Spot. “Go look out in the kitchen.”
“Grampy!” exclaimed Fawn.
“Happy Thanksgiving!” exclaimed Grampy.
Fawn was so thrilled to see Grampy that he almost cried.
“You don’t think I would ever let you have a turkey dinner without me now do you?” asked Grampy.
“I don’t ever want to have a turkey dinner without you,” cried Fawn.
