Valentine’s Day Mix-Up

VALENTINE'S DAY MIX-UP

"Hi Chester!" exclaimed Suzie Chipmunk. "What are you doing?"

"Nothing," said Chester.

"Oh," said Suzie. "I thought you were going to get ready for the Valentine's Day dance."

"I'm not going," said Chester.

"And why not?" asked Suzie. "It is going to be a lot of fun."

"Yes," said Chester. "But I just don't feel like going."

"Okay," said Suzie. "What is this really all about? I know you want to go to that dance. You said so yourself yesterday."

"I did," said Chester. "But I really don't want to go now."

"Is this about Maggie Chipmunk?" asked Suzie. "Come on, Chester, I'm your sister. You can level with me."

"Well yes," said Chester. "I heard Maggie tell her friend Tammy that she doesn't like me."

"But Chester," said Suzie. "That just isn't true."

"I heard it with my own two ears," said Chester.

"Well," said Suzie. "Then if Maggie did say that, why did she call here earlier this afternoon looking for you."

"She did!" exclaimed Chester, smiling.

"Yes," said Suzie. "She did."

"What did she say?" asked Chester.

"She wanted to talk to you," said Suzie.

Chester called Maggie on the phone and it turned out that she wanted to know what time he was picking her up to go to the dance. Chester asked Maggie straight out about what he heard her say to Tammy that afternoon.

"Chester," said Maggie. "I never said any such thing. What I did say to Tammy was that I couldn't wait to go to the dance with you and then Tammy asked me if I liked to dance and I said I didn't."

"Come on," said Chester to Suzie. "We have to hurry if we are going to make it to the dance on time."

Suzie just shook her head at her brother and grabbed her jacket.
