Groundhog Day

CAVEMAN JACK AND GROUNDHOG DAY

It was a cold and dull day when Caveman Jack decided he wanted to go for a walk. Caveman Jack dressed up warm and pulled his scarf tightly around his neck. He walked out into the freezing cold temperatures from his nice warm cave. As he was walking along Caveman Jack saw a groundhog pop his head up through his whole.

"Why did you pop your head up out of your hole?" asked Caveman Jack.

"Today is February 2," said the groundhog.

"What does the date have anything to do with this?" asked Caveman Jack.

"Don't you know what February 2 is?" asked the groundhog.

"Yes," said Caveman Jack. "February 2 is just another day in February."

"But it isn't just any day," said the groundhog. "February 2 is Groundhog Day."

"Groundhog Day," laughed Caveman Jack.

"Well I came up with it," said the groundhog.

"Why doesn't that surprise me?" asked Caveman Jack. "So what is Groundhog Day all about and why does it have a day all to itself?"

"On Groundhog Day," explained the groundhog. "All groundhogs come out of their holes and check to see if they can see their own shadows."

"Why?" asked Caveman Jack.

"Well," said the groundhog. "If we see our shadow there will be six more weeks of winter weather and if we don't see our shadow spring is right around the corner."

"So did you see your shadow when you came out of your hole?" asked Caveman Jack.

"I don't know," said the groundhog.

"What do you mean you don't know?" asked Caveman Jack.

"Well I was just checking for my shadow when you came along," said the groundhog.

"I see," said Caveman Jack. "So now how are we going to know if spring is right around the corner or not?"

"Let's go see if my other friends have poked their heads out of their holes yet," said the groundhog.

"Okay," said Caveman Jack.

Caveman Jack followed the groundhog through some thick forest and then to an open meadow.

"Oh good," said the groundhog. "It looks like the groundhogs here haven't come out of their holes yet."

"Wait," said Caveman Jack. "I just saw one come of out his hole over there. He came out and looked around and scurried back into his hole."

"Well," said the groundhog. "That is your answer then."

"What do you mean?" asked Caveman Jack.

"Well if you came outside and saw your shadow," said the groundhog. "Then, what would you do?"

"I'd probably turn around and go back inside," said Caveman Jack. "Oh wait, you are saying that the groundhog saw his shadow and there is going to be six more weeks of winter."

"Unfortunately," said the groundhog.

"I don't like Groundhog Day," said Caveman Jack. "Can't we do it again? Can't you come out of your hole and not see your shadow this time?"

"Sure," said the groundhog. "Next Groundhog Day."
