MAY WITH NO FLOWERS

written by Debbie Williamson

"Mommy, when is the sun ever going to shine!" exclaimed five year old, Jamie. "I want to go outside and play."

"It's pretty cold out today," said Mommy. "However, I think that you could go outside and play for a little while. You have to dress warmly, though."

"Okay," said Jamie. "Do you want to come outside too?"

"You know something," Mommy said. "It's been a long time since I've gone outside to play with you. Yes, let's do that."

"Oh goodie!" exclaimed Jamie, excitedly.

Jamie and Mommy got dressed in their warm, winter clothing. They were on their way out the door, when Mommy spotted the calendar.

"Look Jamie," said Mommy. "It's been so cold that we forgot to change the calendar. It's now May."

Mommy took her gloves off and flipped the page on the calendar. She then remembered a little verse that she used to sing when she was a girl.

"April showers bring May flowers," sang Mommy.

"Well where are the May flowers?" asked Jamie as Mommy held the door open for her.

The cold wind bit into their cheeks. Jamie didn't seem to mind too much. She found a big pile of snow on the front lawn. Mommy and Jamie spent about an hour playing outside. "Jamie, let's go inside now," said Mommy. "It's getting colder out here."

Mommy fixed Jamie a cup of hot chocolate and marshmallows.

"Mommy, where are all the flowers this year?" Jamie asked.

"I guess they are still buried underneath all that snow," said Mommy.

"Are we ever going to have flowers this year?" asked Jamie.

"I have an idea," said Mommy.

Mommy disappeared downstairs in the basement for a minute. Soon, she returned with some planting pots, a packet of flower seeds and some planting soil that had been left over from last year.

"What are you doing, Mommy?" asked Jamie.

"We are going to plant some seeds and then we will watch them grow," said Mommy.

"And then, we can have some May flowers all to ourselves," said Jamie, excitedly.

Mommy spooned some soil into each of the planting pots. Then, carefully, Jamie placed some seeds into each one. They gave each some water and then set the pots on the window ledge in the living room, where the sun is the warmest.

For the first few days, Jamie was beginning to lose her patience.

"These seeds are never going to grow," said Jamie, angrily, one afternoon.

"Dear, you have to give them time," said Mommy. "You can't just expect them to start growing overnight."

Mommy picked one of the planting pots up and looked inside it.

"Oh my!" exclaimed Mommy. "Jamie, look, look in the pot. This one has started to sprout!"

"Wow!" exclaimed Jamie, happily. "Nobody but us is going to have flowers this May!"
