HALLOWEEN CELEBRATION

written by Debbie Williamson

"I think this year for Halloween we should have some fun with the children," said Poor Mountain Father, after the Poor Mountain children and left for school.

"Like what kind of fun?" asked Poor Mountain Mother.

"Well," said Poor Mountain Father. "It is really difficult for the children to go trick-or-treating here in the mountains so, I was thinking, we should have a little party for them instead."

"That sounds like a really fun idea," said Poor Mountain Mother. "I could bake a Halloween cake."

"Oh that would be really great," said Poor Mountain Father. "The children would love it. I was also thinking that we could play some games and carve a pumpkin."

Poor Mountain Mother and Poor Mountain Father were very excited about their plan for a Halloween party for the children. They decided to keep it a secret and make it a surprise for them.

The Poor Mountain children got ready for school on Halloween morning and as soon as they were out the door Poor Mountain Mother and Poor Mountain Father were busy getting things ready for the Halloween party.  Poor Mountain Mother baked a beautiful orange cake and then made some black licorice icing for it while Poor Mountain Father went out to the pumpkin patch and picked the biggest, plumpest pumpkin that he could find. He also decorated the cabin with black and orange streamers.

"Here they come," said Poor Mountain Father, when he saw the school bus turning around in the driveway.

"Okay," said Poor Mountain Mother. "Hit the lights."

Poor Mountain Father turned out the lights and waited behind the couch with Poor Mountain Mother for the children to come inside.

"Surprise!" exclaimed Poor Mountain Mother and Poor Mountain Father when the children came through the door.

"What is this?" asked Poor Mountain Sister, excitedly, dropping her back pack in the middle of the floor.

"Wow!" exclaimed Poor Mountain Brother. "It looks like a Halloween party."

"That's what it is," said Poor Mountain Father.

"Yes," said Poor Mountain Mother. "Poor Mountain Father thought that this would be more fun than trying to trick-or-treat. We know how difficult it is to trick-or-treat around here."

Poor Mountain Mother brought out some snacks, while Poor Mountain Father brought out the pumpkin and some carving knives.

"Look how big this pumpkin is!" exclaimed Poor Mountain Sister. "We are going to have a lot of fun carving it!"

"And look at the Halloween cake that Poor Mountain Mother baked for us," said Poor Mountain Brother. "It looks so good!"

The Poor Mountain Family had a lot of fun together, in fact, they thought that it would be a good idea to have a Halloween party each year from then on forward.
