SNOWBALLS

written by Debbie Williamson

“Harold!” Mom called from the kitchen window. “Those better not be snowballs in your hands! You know what your father told you.”

“Ah Mom!” cried seven year old, Harold. “I wasn’t going to throw them at anyone, I promise!”

“Harold!” shouted father, coming outside from the basement door. “What are you doing with those snowballs?”

“Oh hi dad,” said Harold, hiding a snowball behind his back.

“Come on Harold,” said Dad, holding out his hand. “Hand it over.”

Harold handed the snowball over to Dad. Dad looked the snowball over carefully.

“Hey Harold,” said Dad, a few minutes later. “This is a pretty good snowball.”

“Yeah, it is,” said Harold excitedly.

“It would be a shame to waste it by throwing it away,” said Dad.

“Well, here,” said Harold. “Let me throw it away!”

“I don’t think so,” said Dad. “I’ve got a better idea. Why don’t we make a snowman out of this snowball?”

“Oh wow!” exclaimed Harold. “We could really do that.”

“Sure we could,” said Dad. “Come on!”

Dad and Harold went to the top of a big hill.

“Now watch this!” exclaimed Dad as he rolled the snowball down the hill.

As the snowball rolled down the hill it got bigger and bigger.

“Look at that!” exclaimed Harold, his eyes as big as the snowball. “It’s huge!”

“Guys!” Mom called from the basement doorway. “Lunch is ready!”

Just then, Mom caught sight of the big snowball, rolling right toward the open door.

“Close the door, honey!” exclaimed Daddy.

It was too late. The snowball rolled right into the basement.

“Oh, oh!” exclaimed Harold. “We’re in trouble.”

“Don’t worry about it,” called Daddy. “Harold and I will clean it up!”

“So much for our snowman, eh Dad,” said Harold.

“Yeah, I guess so,” said Dad.

Harold and Dad cleaned the snow out of the basement before coming upstairs for lunch.

“What were you two thinking of?” asked Mom, when the two sat down at the table.

“We were making a snowman,” said Harold.

“I’m sorry, I just couldn’t let a good snowball go to waste,” said Dad.

“A snowman,” thought Mom aloud. “That actually sounds like fun.”

After lunch, Mom, Dad and Harold went outside and built the biggest and the best snowman in the neighbourhood. Mom even let the snowman wear her best scarf.

“Pretty cool, snowman, eh guys,” said Mom, standing back admiring their great work of art.

“Yeah,” said Harold. “Pretty cool!”
