“Fawn, what do you want to do today?” asked Spot.
“Nothing much,” said Fawn. “I think that I just want to stay right here, inside the barn.”
“Is there anything wrong with you?” asked Spot.
“I don’t think so,” said Fawn. “I am a bit tired.”
“Well, that’s no surprise,” said Spot. “After all, you didn’t sleep very well last night.”
“I guess I ate too much before I went to bed last night,” said Fawn.
“That’s probably what it was,” said Spot. “Why don’t you just stay here and rest up?”
Spot went outside and saw Jenny Hansen, one of her owners, sitting by the fence.
“Hi Jenny,” said Spot. “What are you doing today?”
“Nothing much,” said Jenny.
“That’s what Fawn told me just now, too,” said Spot.
“Do you want to do something together?” asked Spot.
“Not right now,” said Jenny. “Maybe later.”
“Okay,” said Spot, wandering out into the field.
Ricky Hansen came out from the corner of the barn he had been hiding behind.
“Poor Spot,” said Jenny.
“I know,” said Ricky. “She’s going to think that nobody cares about her.”
“She is going to be so surprised when she finds out that Fawn is having a surprise party for her,” said Jenny.
“I know,” said Ricky. “This time Fawn had a wonderful idea. Spot doesn’t have a clue as to what is going on.”
“Well,” said Jenny. “Spot is down in the lower field right now. Let’s go help Fawn.”
Ricky and Jenny helped Fawn decorate the barn with balloons and streamers. They were just putting up the last balloon when Mr. and Mrs. Hansen came into the barn with trays of food and a beautifully decorated birthday cake that Mrs. Hansen had made herself.
“Yummy!” exclaimed Fawn.
“Now you stay away from it,” said Mrs. Hansen, pointing her finger at Fawn.
“Here comes Spot!” exclaimed Jenny, who had been keeping watch for her out the barn window. “Everyone hide!”
Everyone scrambled for cover. Spot came in to the barn and went to flick the lights on.
“SURPRISE!” everyone shouted. “Happy Birthday, Spot.”
Spot couldn’t believe it. She didn’t even realize that it was her birthday!
“Oh my!” exclaimed Spot. “I wasn’t expecting this!”
“Well, happy birthday,” said Fawn, giving Spot a quick kiss on her cheek. “Now, can we eat?”
“Good old Fawn,” laughed Mr. Hansen. “All he wants is food!”
Spot had the best birthday of her life. She got lots of wonderful gifts and she was grateful to Fawn when she later learned from Jenny that the birthday party was all his idea.
