A RATHER HAPPY DAY

written by Debbie Williamson

“Hey Fawn,” said Spot. “Come on, we can’t be late.”

“I’m ready,” said Fawn.

“Well then let’s go,” said Spot.

Fawn and Spot left the barn and walked up to the main house. There were cars up and down the driveway and some of them were even parked on the side of the road.

“Wow!” exclaimed Fawn. “This is a big night for Mrs. Hansen!”

“It sure is,” said Spot, noticing the crew from the local television and newspaper. “Mrs. Hansen sure has accomplished a lot.”

“Imagine writing 900 children’s stories,” said Fawn.

“Yes,” said Spot, very proud of Mrs. Hansen’s accomplishment. “There aren’t too many people that can say they have written one hundred stories, never mind 900 stories.”

“And to think that we were one of her first sets of characters that she started to write about,” said Fawn.

“We were actually the second,” said Spot.

“Who was the first?” asked Fawn.

“The first children’s story that Mrs. Hansen wrote was called ‘The Tale of Racum and Bear’,” said Spot.

“Oh yes,” said Fawn. “Now I remember. I remember Mrs. Hansen reading that story to Ricky and Jenny when they were just little.”

“Yeah,” said Spot. “I remember that too. Ricky would have been 7 years old and Jenny would have been 5.”

“Wow!” exclaimed Fawn, wiping a tear from his eye. “I remember Mrs. Hansen took Jenny into Ricky’s bedroom and set her on his bed beside him. Ricky had that quilt that Mrs. Hansen had made for him, remember, that pickup truck quilt.”

“Gee,” said Spot. “I almost forgot about that quilt. That was a really nice quilt too.”

Both Fawn and Spot were already crying their eyes out when the got up to the main house. It had been a fun and enjoyable journey for Mrs. Hansen to have written those 900 children’s stories and Fawn and Spot were very proud to be a part of it.

“Oh dear,” said Mrs. Hansen, wiping tears from her eyes as well, when Fawn and Spot finally got to the main house. “I see you two are crying too.”

“These are happy tears,” said Fawn and Spot. “Happy tears.”

“Yes,” said Mrs. Hansen. “So are mine!”

Mrs. Hansen was asked to get up and give a little speech.

“Well this day marks the milestone of my 900th children’s story,” said Mrs. Hansen. “Most of the inspirations for my stories have come from my two children and the different pets and animals that I have had over the years. There is no way that any of my stories would have even come to life if it wasn’t for Ricky and Jenny and Fawn and Spot and the rest of the animals and pets that have touched my heart over the past 17 years. This day for me, will always be remembered as a rather happy day.”
