Warmth

WARMTH written by Debbie Williamson Sitting in front of the fireplace on a cold winter evening, wrapped up in my favourite blanket is my idea of warmth, or soaking in a very warm bathtub for hours on end. Warmth is about all I can stand to think of while I stand outside in the freezing cold, waiting for my bus to come. Naturally my bus is late this morning. I decided that I would go into the coffee shop up the street and have a coffee. Just as I put my hand on the door to the coffee shop, I heard the familiar sound of my bus coming up the street. "Coffee or get to work on time," I said to myself. I knew what the answer to that question was, even before I had … Read entire article »

20 Below Zero

20 BELOW ZERO written by Debbie Williamson "Oh my!" exclaimed Mommy, looking at the thermometer. "The temperature is dropping fast. I'd better call Jimmy in. He's going to freeze to death out there." Jimmy was outside building a snowman. He was having a lot of fun. However, Jimmy noticed that some frost was beginning to form on the end of his mittens. "Oh no," said Jimmy, dropping the stick that he was holding onto. "It's starting to get colder out here. It has to be at least 20 below zero." Just then, Jimmy noticed that a flock of birds flew over top of him. "Oh, the poor birds must be getting cold, too," said Jimmy. "Jimmy!" exclaimed Mommy. "Come on inside now. It's getting too cold out here." Jimmy saw his mother's breath. "Oh boy," said Jimmy. "It sure … Read entire article »

Angela’s Adventure

ANGELA'S ADVENTURE written by Debbie Williamson Walking along the street, Angela found her way to the playground. She could see several children playing on the swings and other playground equipment. Angela could see the smiles on their faces and she could hear the happy sound of laughter emulating from them. “Sob, sob, sob,” Angela heard, coming from behind a huge oak tree, just ahead of her. “Oh dear,” said Angela, peering behind the tree to see a little girl, head in her lap, sobbing. “What seems to be the matter little one?” The girl at first did not answer her. Angela saw that behind the tears, the girl was very pretty with long brown hair and big green eyes. “Some big kids stole my doll,” cried the little girl, after a few minutes.“ They said that … Read entire article »

It is Freezing Cold

IT IS FREEZING COLD written by Debbie Williamson This is Prairie Pete. I live in Saskatchewan, Canada. I am the youngest of the Canadian Brothers. I live in the prairies and it is winter time here, even though it is only the first day of December. As far as I am concerned, winter starts the very day my thermometer says it does and that is when it is freezing cold here. This morning, I looked at my thermometer and it read -17 Celsius. Now, for you folks that don't know anything about Celsius, that reads about 1 degrees Fahrenheit. Now, that isn't really too cold, however, on the prairies, when we have a high wind, anything that reads below zero Celsius and it is freezing cold. Today, unfortunately, was just one of those days that … Read entire article »

A Visit to the Arctic

A VISIT TO THE ARCTIC written by Debbie Williamson "Hi there boys and girls! I sure hope you are nice and warm under all those blankets. I'm not. I'm way up here in the Arctic. It's very cold up here!" Travellin' Rick had arrived in the Arctic about a month before. He was staying with an Inuit family. There were four members of this particular family, Iza, an 80 year old grandmother, George, the father, Sarah, the mother and Sally, the two month old infant. Because Travellin' Rick was a strong man, he was helping George throughout his stay. George was glad to have an extra hand around. The Arctic can be a very difficult and lonely place to live. The Arctic is situated right at the very top of our planet. Hardly any plants … Read entire article »
