November in the Prairies

NOVEMBER IN THE PRAIRIES written by Debbie Williamson Hi everyone! This is Prairie Pete. I am one of the Canadian Brothers. I live in a small prairie town in Saskatchewan. It is now November in the prairies and boy that wind sure can blow cold on the open prairies. You have to dress nice and warm and always be prepared for the weather here. We get mostly cold, windy days in November with temperatures ranging from around plus 5 to minus 20 degrees Celsius. I live on a ranch and just because it is cold and windy though, work does not stop on the prairies. There is always so much to do. Firewood has to be brought in and split. Animals must be fed and watered each and every day. Machines have to be … Read entire article »

Pot of Gold

POT OF GOLD written by Debbie Williamson Back in the early 1900's, there lived an old man called Gus and his donkey, Willie. Gus was a lonely sort of man because he didn't have any family. Gus was a mountain man. He didn't know too much about anything else but he sure knew his mountains. He knew every name of every tree and every name of every animal that lived on his mountain. One day, Gus was low on his luck. He had gambled his life savings away that night before, in the town nearby. "Ah Willie!" exclaimed Gus sadly to Willie, as he loaded his few belongings onto his back. "I've been such a fool, gambling and boozing all my hard earned money away. What could I have been thinking of? Well, old boy, … Read entire article »

Story 450 – Merry, Merry Robin

MERRY, MERRY ROBIN written by Debbie Williamson Fawn and Spot were taking an afternoon walk on a gravel road in British Columbia, Canada. It was a beautiful spring day. The sun was shining and there was not a cloud in the sky. Fawn was a little bit sad though because he had just stumbled on some loose gravel. He had a small cut on his leg. “You’ll be alright,” said Spot, noticing there was no real damage done. Spot just happened to look into an old crab-apple tree and she saw a robin land in it. “Look!” whispered Spot, pointing to the robin. A smile came to Fawn from one ear right over to the other. “There is just something about a robin,” said Fawn. “They make me happy. They make me merry!” “Yes, me too,” said Spot. … Read entire article »

Story 353 – Squeaky

SQUEAKY written by Debbie Williamson Squeaky is a pretty little piglet that lives on a ranch in British Columbia, Canada. Squeaky loves the ranch that he lives on. He loves the barn that he lives in and especially loves his owners, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson, very much. The only thing that Squeaky does not like is a wolf that frequently visits the ranch. Each morning, Squeaky is let out of the barn and is allowed to bask in the sun or wade in his mud hole. Around noon each day, a wolf comes around the mud hole and torments Squeaky. “Gee,” said the wolf to Squeaky one day. “You need to get just a little more fat on you and you will be ready for my frying pan.” Squeaky squealed, ran and hid in the … Read entire article »

Story 357 – Summer is Over

SUMMER IS OVER written by Debbie Williamson      “Fawn,” said Spot. “Let’s go swimming today.”      “Okay,” said Fawn. “That sounds like fun.”      Spot went into the bedroom to get her bathing suit on and happened to glance at the calendar that was hanging on the wall in the hallway.      “Gee,” said Spot.  “We aren’t going to have too many days left to go swimming this year.”      “What are you talking about?” asked Fawn.      “Well, do you realize that summer is almost over?” said Spot.      “Really?” asked Fawn. “But where did it go?”      “Well don’t forget that we just moved to BC at the beginning of the summer so that is probably why it seemed like it went so fast,” said Spot.      “That is true,” said Fawn. “I’m kind of looking forward to … Read entire article »

Mountain Life

MOUNTAIN LIFE written by Debbie Williamson "Hey there Nolan," waved Mr. Henry from across the road. "How are things today?" "Things are great," said Nolan. "Dad just got back from the sales barn and he is very happy today." "Don't blame him," said Mr. Henry. "I bet he's glad that border is open now." "Definitely," said Nolan. "We were just about starving and Dad was even talking about selling the ranch." "Not good," said Mr. Henry. "Definitely not," said Nolan. "We needed the American border to be open to our beef. It was killing us. Anyway, Mr. Henry, I got to get back to my chores." "No problem," said Mr. Henry. "Tell your Dad I said hello." "I will," said Nolan. Nolan stood and watched Mr. Henry walk back into his house. He admired Mr. Henry. Mr. Henry might be … Read entire article »

Story 226 – Fawn and Spot in BC

FAWN AND SPOT IN BC written by Debbie Williamson “Fawn,” said Spot, holding her hand to her mouth as Mr. Hansen turned another corner in the van. “Look at that beautiful sight!” “I’ve never seen anything so beautiful,” said Fawn. “It is like a new scene pops up in front of us each time Mr. Hansen turns a corner,” said Spot. “If I had have known British Columbia was this beautiful,” said Fawn. “I would have come here a long time ago.” “Oh me too!” said Spot. Just then Mr. Hansen stopped the van in the middle of the road and got out. “What is going on?” Fawn asked Mrs. Hansen. “Look out the side window,” said Mrs. Hansen. “Oh Spot,” said Fawn. “Look at the bear on the side of the road.” “Oh my!” said Spot. “There are like three … Read entire article »

Story 225 – Little Kittens

LITTLE KITTENS written by Debbie Williamson “Hey Fawn,” said Spot. “Have you seen all the kittens at the back of the barn?” “What?” asked Fawn, angrily. “There are more little kittens that I haven’t seen.” “Why are you so angry about the little kittens?” asked Spot. “They are adorable.” “Adorable my foot!” exclaimed Fawn. “Have you ever been able to pick one up?” “Well no,” Spot had to admit. “I haven’t. They run away just as soon as I come anywhere near them.” “My point exactly,” said Fawn. “For two weeks now I have been trying to pet one and they just scurry off.” “So that is why you don’t like them,” said Spot. “Just because you can’t pet them. That is silly.” “But I want to pet one,” said Fawn. “I wanted to make friends with them.” “Well,” said … Read entire article »

Summer in the Prairies

SUMMER IN THE PRAIRIES written by Debbie Williamson Hi there! This is Prairie Pete. I live in the middle of the prairies, in the province of Saskatchewan. Summer in the prairies is a very special time of the year and the main reason for that is the beautiful sunsets we get. I don't think any other province in the whole country would see a sunset as beautiful as we see them here in Saskatchewan. When the sun sets in Saskatchewan, it is like the sun meeting the land. This is because the land in Saskatchewan is totally flat so as the sun sets it seems like it is going down below the ground level. It is one of the most awesome sights to see. Sunsets are not the only thing that make a prairie … Read entire article »
